Just started your own business?

If you have just started your own business you’ve probably got a lot of things on your mind right now, such as product development, advertising, marketing, social media. The last thing on your list is very likely to be bookkeeping.

However, don’t under estimate the value of bookkeeping. Every business has to do it, and the longer you leave it the harder it becomes to tackle that pile of receipts. A simple spreadsheet will help you organise all your payments and receipts.

Once you have mastered bookkeeping then a cashflow spreadsheet is also very useful, especially in your first year where expenses may be high. Cashflow problems are one of the main reasons for failure of businesses, so it’s important to get to grips with this.

If you don’t know where to start then don’t suffer in silence. Any good accountant will help you, and quite often give you a spreadsheet all set up for you.

The main thing I have learned for any small business is to hold your hand up and ask for help. It usually doesn’t cost much, and it will help you create the business you want.
